The last time I watched Idol was during Season 4 (when Carrie won), so when news of a fellow Filipino making it to the finals reached my radius, I caught up on her performances on YouTube to see if she is indeed Idol material.
Side Note: I was once an Idol addict. Project Runway took over and had me at 'Make It Work!'
Name's Ramiele Malubay. Giveaway!
Checked her Idol profile. No doubt she is kababayan (fellow countryman).
Being Filipino and, as my culture has taught me, critical of fellow Filipinos' work, I'd say that there are far better singers here in the Philippines. (You should hear those blind crooners on sidewalks and train stations give Ray Charles a run for his money.) But hey, she was at the right place at the right time and the judges loved her during the preliminaries. For that, I am proud.
I wonder why her star lacked the luster she needed to carry on to the finals, as if she grew worse by the week. Here's her 'losing' performance during Dolly Parton Night:
Too bad you're out of the competition, kabayan. Consider flying over and continue your career here in Manila where you'll surely be royalty. That way, you'll get to sing alongside those Filipino singers you proudly mentioned in your fact sheet. For all we know, the 'axe' is just a prelude.
And that's it for me and Idol this season.
I highlighted in blue the nicest answers. :-)

I chanced upon indie artist John West's music at a time when I was looking for good non-Top 40 acts to load on my iTunes. Sure, his breakout song was an acoustic version of Umbrella, but he deserves attention beyond the premature remake. He writes his own music and has that distinct melancholic, soulful sound I tend to gravitate towards in my 'music and me' time.
This is his first 'professional' music video 'Loved You Tonight.'
Visit his site at www.johnpeterwest.com and download the song 'New Year's Day.' Loves it.
What's your musical horoscope? (Put your player on shuffle and write down the first 10 songs that come up.)
This is scaring me (don't want any 'secret' song to pop out of the shuffled list). Here goes anyway...
1. I Never Loved You Anyway - The Corrs
2. Together In Electric Dreams - Human League
3. Breathless - The Corrs
4. I'll Rise (Eric's Beach Mix) - Peyton
5. (I've Had) The Time of My Life - OST Dirty Dancing
6. You're The First, My Last, My Everything - Barry White
7. Until I Get Over You - Christina Milian
8. For Everything I Am - Christian Bautista (oops, there goes one)
9. Impulsive - Wilson Philipps
10. Get Here - Oleta Adams
Relating this to my previous entry on musical genres, my horoscope's pretty accurate. I'm proud, nonetheless.
Do you tend to like music in particular genres, or are your tastes all over the place? What are your most and least favorite musical genres?
I am partial to certain musical genres, though my iPod playlists would tell you that my preference in music is all over the place!
My Dad has a big influence on my taste. He used to be a vocalist/guitarist/drummer/percussionist/pothead during the 60s and 70s and brought most of music into the 80s, when I was born. I grew up listening/singing/dancing to Elvis, Beatles, Beach Boys, Tavares, Friends of Distinction, Aretha Franklin, Carole King, and most of Motown. I still keep some of these artists' songs in my iPod.
In the early 90s, I was exposed to various forms of rock music - thanks to cousins who caught on the Metallica/Guns 'n Roses/Ugly Kid Joe rage at that time.
There are some musical genres that I learned to love on my own as well. I am a late bloomer electronica fan and discovered (or re-discovered) 80's Pop and New Wave at the turn of the century. Lately, I've been watching out for rising artists from the UK scene.
All in all, I am an old soul who occasionally appeciates new genres/artists/songs
Most favorite - Old School Soul, Motown, House, Chillout, good Pop
Least Favorite - Overdoses of Heavy Metal and Country, bad Pop
It hasn't even been a year yet Rihanna's Umbrella had already been covered by four different artists, all with a different spin on the award-winning R&B song. I am not an R&B fan, but I must admit to liking the lyrics of the song and the infectious "ella-ella-ella-eh" at the end of the chorus.
Neighbors, here are the four Umbrella covers circulating in cyberspace.
L-R: Marie Digby's poppish rendition that came out in the soundtrack of The Hills, Scott Simons's part-triphop, part-lounge version, LA-based artist John West's fresh acoustic and cello-ed attack, and Mandy Moore's slow and soulful take.
What song do you wish would never show up on a karaoke list?
Definitely My Way! Filipino legend has it that anyone who sings this song at a karaoke dies sooner than expected. This is the song to be avoided. (You better not sing along to the video!)
Other songs to ban:
- I Want It That Way and Quit Playing Games by the Backstreet Boys - I've had too many karaoke experiences with guy friends who 'loathe' BSB but end up singing and dancing better to the song. (Complete with the requisite 'hands outstretched' boyband move.) Hyprocrites!!!!!
- Top Of The World by the Carpenters - C'mon. Anyone can sing a Carpenters song but no one I know has ever really done it much justice. Karen Carpenter must be very frustrated.
- Last Dance - I'm sure there are other songs to be sung last at Karaoke Night.
Paolo Nutini.
Kid's only 19 years old and his sound is already good as it is. I could only imagine him and his music evolve.
I particularly like his songs "Autumn" and "Loving You."
Autumn's this contemplative song great for rainy and chilly afternoons.
Loving You, for some reason, sounds like "Let's Get It On" to me. Perfect when you're in the mood.
His album "These Streets" is great.
